Pregnancy success is associated with the placenta that is not only essential for oxygen supply, nourishment and pregnancy hormones but also plays a role in the protection of the fetus against maternal immunologic attack. However, it is still not clear whether the pathology in MS and EAE is due to neuroantigen-specific CD4+ T cell-mediated autoimmune responses and/or bystander myelin damage resulting from an inflammatory response.
