21. Real-time breath gas analysis of carbon monoxide : laser-based detection and pulmonary gas exchange modeling
Sammanfattning : Breath gas analysis is a promising approach for non-invasive medical diagnostics and physiological monitoring. Real-time, breath-cycle resolved biomarker detection facilitates data interpretation and has the potential to improve the diagnostic value of breath tests as exhalation profiles carry spatiotemporal information about biomarker origin and gas exchange in the respiratory tract. 22. Calibration and quality assessment of DESCARTES : grabsampler for stratospheric tracers
Sammanfattning : DESCARTES is a light-weight, balloon-borne grab sampler for stratospheric long-lived tracers developed at the University of Cambridge. 33 flights have been performed with two versions of the instrument at northern latitudes by the DESCARTES team at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna during the years 1997-2000. 23. Human papillomaviruses in skin cancer and cervical cancer
Sammanfattning : The causal relationship between persistent genital infections with human papillomavirus (HPV) and development of cervical cancer is well established. In contrast, the significance of infections with cutaneous HPV for development of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is not well understood. LÄS MER
24. Provenance, transport, and the fate of organic matter and sediments drained through Himalayan Rivers in Nepal
Sammanfattning : Despite its small area (ca. 595,000 km2), the Himalayan region transfers disproportionally high amounts of sediments and organic matter (OM) through a network of rivers into the oceanic sink. LÄS MER
25. Nitrogen fixation among marine bacterioplankton
Sammanfattning : While bacterioplankton indisputably control vital biogeochemical paths in the cycling of carbon and nutrients in the world’s oceans, our knowledge about the functional and genetic diversity of bacterioplankton communities is negligible. In this thesis, molecular and more traditional microbiological methods were used to study the specific function of N2-fixation and in a general sense diversity of marine bacterioplankton species.
