11. Year-round production of forest seedlings under LED lamps : Biological and energetic implications of indoor cultivation
Sammanfattning : Year-round cultivation of forest seedlings under light emitting diodes (LED) is a technology receiving increased attention from nurseries in the boreal forest regions. In these areas, the climate is characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations, resulting in short vegetation periods with narrow time windows for seedling transplanting and outdoor growth. LÄS MER
12. Treeline dynamics in short and long term perspectives : observational and historical evidence from the southern Swedish Scandes
Sammanfattning : Treelines in high-mountain regions are constrained by heat deficiency, although the working mechanisms are still not entirely understood. Observational and paleoecological studies on treeline performance may contribute to increased understanding of the treeline phenomenon in general. LÄS MER
13. Impact of root and mycorrhizal exudation on soil carbon fluxes : influence of elevated CO2 and metals
Sammanfattning : The thesis concerns the behavior of root and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) exudates. In particular, the dynamics of soluble low molecular weight (LMW) organic compounds such as organic acids (LMWOAs), amino acids, monosaccharides, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have been studied. 14. Ecology of lichens in boreal coniferous forests with reference to spatial and temporal patterns
Sammanfattning : The thesis deals with the ecology of lichens in two contrasting types of forest, epiphytic lichens in old Picea abies forest of the fi re-refugia type and epigeic as well as epixylic lichens in a successional sequence of fire- susceptible Pinus sylvestris forests. Results in five separate papers form the basis for a discussion of general patterns of dispersal, succession and life strategies in lichens. LÄS MER
15. Process development and environmental assessment within softwood based biorefineries
Sammanfattning : We urgently need to move from a fossil-based to a bio-based society. From a Swedish perspective, a promising way forward are biorefineries with an integrated production of materials, chemicals, and energy from the softwood species Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies).
