16. Glacier-Ocean Interactions in the Arctic : Contemporary calving and frontal melt from field observations, remote sensing, and numerical modelling
Sammanfattning : Globally, glaciers are losing mass as a result of the changing climate, with this mass loss having a considerable societal impact through rising sea levels. Glaciers which terminate in the oceans are particularly vulnerable to changing external conditions as a result of high sensitivity at their marine margins. LÄS MER
17. Space-Time Prediction of Ocean Winds
Sammanfattning : The topic of this thesis is inspired by an experiment in which a vessel, laying a submarine cable, was provided with forecasts overlaid with satellite observations of significant wave height. During the operation, the vessel was close to an adverse weather area and the personnel on board could confirm that the forecast was not as close to the "ground truth" as the satellite observation was. 18. An investigation into ocean thermodynamics and water-mass transformation
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents oceanic budgets of potential temperature, salinity and buoyancy as well as a novel way of diagnosing water-mass transformation in salinity-temperature space. The buoyancy of seawater is given by a nonlinear function of temperature, salinity and pressure and much of the work in this thesis revolves around how fluxes of heat and salinity influence the buoyancy of seawater through these nonlinearities. 19. 231Pa, 230Th and 232Th as tracers of deep water circulation and particle transport : Insights from the Mediterranean Sea and the Arctic Ocean
Sammanfattning : The naturally occurring U and Th-series radionuclides have shown to have a considerable importance for the understanding of biogeochemical processes on Earth and in the ocean. In this thesis, the isotopes 230-thorium (230Th), 232-thorium (232Th) and 231-protactinium (231Pa) are used as tracers of the transport and scavenging of marine particles and water circulation. 20. Ocean mixing and polynyas at Maud Rise, Weddell Sea
Sammanfattning : The Weddell Sea Polynya is an intermittent, ice free area in the marginal ice zone with an extent of up to 350 000 km². It was first observed by satellites in the winter seasons of 1974-1976. In 2016 and 2017, an open-ocean polynya opened over the Maud Rise oceanic plateau in the eastern Weddell Sea, which was the largest since the 70’s. LÄS MER
