  1. 6. Genetic factors and the role of the NMDA receptor in pain modulation and the effect of opioids

    Författare :Aida Plesan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :pain; NMDA-receptor antagonists; genetic difference; rat strain; opioids; methadone; morphine tolerance; neuropathic pain;

    Sammanfattning : Pain perception and the response to opioid analgesics are determined by a number of factors, among which genetic variability and the activation of the NMDA-receptor for glutamate play an important role. The effects of two clinically available NMDA-receptor antagonists, ketamine (KET) and dextromethorphan (DEX), were evaluated on an animal model of acute nociception, the hot plate test, and on human experimental acute ischemic pain. 2. 7. Treatment of pain behavior after spinal cord injury in rats with special emphasis on the role of adenosine receptors

    Författare :Margareta von Heijne; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adenosine; adenosine receptors; allodynia; baclofen; central pain; clonidine; intrathecal; morphine; neuropathic pain; opioid; rat; R-phenylisopropyladenosine; spinal cord injury; tolerance;

    Sammanfattning : Central pain is a form of neuropathic pain occurring after injury or dysfunction in the central nervous system, including the spinal cord. Allodynia (pain to innocuous stimuli) to mechanical and cold stimulation is a common feature of central pain and it is often resistant to treatment. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Genetic differences in neuropathy and opioid responses in rats

    Författare :Aleksandra Bulka; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Allodynia; genetic difference; neuropathic pain; NMDA-receptor; opioids; rat strains; pharmacokinetics; tolerance.;

    Sammanfattning : The studies examined mechanisms and treatments of experimental neuropathic pain with particular emphasis on the differences between rat strains and sub-strains in basal nociceptive sensitivity, development of neuropathic behaviors and sensitivity to opioid analgesia. In order to study the mechanisms that mediate mechanical allodynia (touch-evoked pain) following ischemic nerve injury to the sciatic nerve in rats, the myelinated primary afferents have been examined in the injured and intact nerves. 4. 9. Central pain after spinal cord injury : experimental studies with special emphasis on pharmacological treatment

    Författare :Wei Yu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :allodynia; central pain; ischemia; spinal cord injury; intrathecal; opioid; opioid receptors; selective opioid agonists; selective opioid antagonists; tolerance; dependence; clonidine; bovine chromaffin cells; encapsulation; resiniferatoxin;

    Sammanfattning : Injuries and dysfunctions of the central nervous system can cause central pain which, according to clinical experience, is often refractory to conventional treatments. The present thesis consists of experimental studies on the mechanisms and treatments of central pain using a well-established animal model of central pain after spinal cord injury. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Toxicological studies of opiate-related death

    Författare :Joakim Strandberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises studies on opiate overdose death, and focuses on evaluation of toxicological characteristics including the possible influence of abstinence and polydrug use for the fatal outcome. In order to identify and classify drug abusers, a screening method for several drugs of abuse was developed and applied on randomly selected autopsy cases. LÄS MER
