11. Immunological aspects of latent tuberculosis infection during pregnancy
Sammanfattning : Pregnancy-induced immune modulation might lead to reactivation of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This thesis explores aspects of immune-based LTBI diagnostics and how pregnancy affects the immune control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. We studied a prospective cohort of women recruited during pregnancy in Ethiopia. LÄS MER
12. Innate immunity to intracellular bacterial infections
Sammanfattning : Intracellular bacterial pathogens have developed mechanisms to enter and invade cells, to survive the immune response and to replicate inside the host. We studied the innate mechanisms that have evolved in the host to battle intracellular bacterial pathogens, such as the obligate intracellular Chlamydia pneumoniae and the facultative intracellular Listeria monocytogenes, which invade the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tracts in humans. 13. Dissection of immunity controlling spread and growth of Listeria monocytogenes in neuronal cells
Sammanfattning : Listeria monocytogenes is a Grain-positive, facultative intracellular bacterium that causes severe infections in the nervous system of domestic animals and humans. Rhombencephalitis (brainstem encephalitis) due to L. monocytogenes, is a localized brainstem infection that is frequent in ruminants, and has been reported in humans as well. LÄS MER
14. Circulating Biomarkers in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer and the Influence of Cigarette Smoking
Sammanfattning : Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a collective name for heterogeneous tumors located in the head and neck regions for which smoking, alcohol and human papillomavirus (HPV) are documented risk factors. The survival of HNC patients has only improved marginally during the last decade. LÄS MER
15. Regulation of T cells in Atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis, the underlying pathology of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, is characterized by chronic inflammation. T cells are present in atherosclerotic plaques and have been implicated in its pathogenesis. LÄS MER
