Even though it sounds like a fairly obvious question, it took more than 200 years to discover that sperm, whose first observation dates back to the 17th century, can penetrate into the oocyte and fuse with it. Interestingly, this initial study was carried out in starfish, and since then, scientists have addressed the fascinating question of how gamete recognition functions using very different model systems.
