11. Integrin αVβ3-Directed Contraction by Connective Tissue Cells : Role in Control of Interstitial Fluid Pressure and Modulation by Bacterial Proteins
Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed at studying mechanisms involved in control of tissue fluid homeostasis during inflammation. The interstitial fluid pressure (PIF) is of importance for control of tissue fluid balance. A lowering of PIF in vivo will result in a transport of fluid from the circulation into the tissue, leading to edema. LÄS MER
12. Experiments on biofilm formation and growth in laminar flows
Sammanfattning : The interaction between fluid dynamics and biofilm growth plays a key role in both medical and industrial applications. Biofilms, or bacteria that are embedded in a protective matrix of extracellular polymeric substances, settle on interfaces such as on implanted devices or ship hulls. LÄS MER
13. Microfluidics for High-Pressure Inertial Focusing : Focusing, Separation and Concentration of Micro and Sub-micron Particles
Sammanfattning : The birth of microsystems set the ground for technologies never imagined before, for it is not only the small size what characterizes the miniaturized systems, but unique phenomena arise in the micro scale. This thesis relates to one such unique phenomenon, inertial focusing, a phenomenon that occurs in microfluidic systems if very special conditions are met and that allows for fine manipulation of particles in fluid samples. 14. Purification, profiling and bioengineering of extracellular vesicles
Sammanfattning : The nano-sized membrane enclosed extracellular vesicles (EVs) transfer macromolecular information in the form of proteins, nucleic acids and lipids across cells. They are important mediators of cell-to-cell communication, but their relatively small size makes EV isolation and down-stream analysis challenging. LÄS MER
15. Preterm intraventricular haemorrhage - Effects of extracellular haemoglobin
Sammanfattning : Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is the most common brain lesion in preterm infants and is most commonly seen in the sickest children, with 15-20% of very preterm infants developing IVH. The mortality of infants with severe IVH is 20-50 % in the neonatal period and over 50 % of surviving infants develop post-haemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) and 40-80 % develop severe neurological impairment, mainly cerebral palsy and mental retardation.
