1. The breast cancer microenvironment and cancer cell secretion - specific effects on cancer progression and subtypes of cancer cells
Sammanfattning : Breast cancer is the cancer form responsible for the most cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, and novel targeted therapies are highly needed. The tumor microenvironment consists of several components, including different cell types, extracellular matrix, oxygen and nutrient gradients and soluble factors that plays a key role in cancer progression. 2. The ontogeny and function of intestinal dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : The intestinal mucosa presents a huge surface area to the external environment and the intestinal immune system is continually exposed to a wide array of foreign antigens derived from resident intestinal microbiota as well as dietary constituents, including food proteins. In order to maintain intestinal homeostasis, the intestinal immune system relies on the ability to generate tolerogenic responses to innocuous antigen while maintaining the ability to develop effective immune responses to intesinal pathogens. 3. Big data networks and orthology analysis
Sammanfattning : Understanding biological systems in complex organisms is important in life science in order to comprehend the interplay of genes, proteins, and compounds causing complex diseases. As biological systems are intricate, bioinformatics tools, models, and algorithms are of the utmost importance to understand the bigger picture and decipher biological meaning from the vast amounts of information available from biological experiments and predictions. 4. Causal inference and case-control studies with applications related to childhood diabetes
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to the research area of causal inference, where estimation of the effect of a treatment on an outcome of interest is the main objective. Some aspects of the estimation of average causal effects in observational studies in general, and case-control studies in particular, are explored. LÄS MER
5. The neuropeptide VIP and the IL-6 family of cytokines in bone : effects on bone resorption, cytokine expression and receptor signalling in osteoblasts and bone marrow stromal cells
Sammanfattning : Bone tissue is continuously degraded and rebuilt to respond to the needs of the body. Cells of the osteoblast lineage are responsible for the formation of bone, whereas the resorption of bone tissue is carried out by osteoclasts. LÄS MER
