1. Transmission Electron Microscopy of Graphene and Hydrated Biomaterial Nanostructures : Novel Techniques and Analysis
Sammanfattning : Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on light element materials and soft matters is problematic due to electron irradiation damage and low contrast. In this doctoral thesis techniques were developed to address some of those issues and successfully characterize these materials at high resolution. LÄS MER
2. Light’EM up! : structural characterization of light-driven membrane protein complexes by cryogenic electron microscopy
Sammanfattning : Photosynthesis is probably the most important process for allowing life to develop into the diverse forms we see today. In this process, solar radiation is used to convert CO2 into biomass. From this process, we obtain oxygen to breathe, sources of food (plant biomass), and the potential for clean and sustainable energy. LÄS MER
3. Fast and reliable alignment and classification of biological macromolecules in electron microscopy images
Sammanfattning : In the last century, immense progress has been made to charter and understand a wide range of biological phenomena. The origin of genetic inheritance was determined, showing that DNA holds genes that determine the architecture of proteins, utilized by the cell for most functions. LÄS MER
4. Association and Microstructure in Self-Assembling Catanionic Systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the phase behavior and phase structure in mixed surfactant-surfactant and surfactant-polymer systems, where the co-solutes have opposite charges (catanionic systems). The initial goal has been to investigate self-assembly aspects in mixtures of single-/double-chained surfactants and bile salt/double-chained surfactants, with the main focus on vesicle assembly in dilute regions. 5. Structural studies of drug targets and a drug metabolizing enzyme
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis describes how structural information about a protein can be acquired, and how it can be used to answer scientific questions about proteins’ function, their dynamic behaviour and their interactions with other proteins or ligands. The catalytic function of the pyrimidine-degrading, drug metabolizing enzyme β-ureidopropionase (βUP) is dependent on the shift between oligomeric states.
