  1. 1. Bio-inspired polysaccharide nanocomposites and foams

    Författare :Anna Svagan; Lars Berglund; Mats Stading; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cellulose; starch; microfibrillated cellulose; biomimetic; nanocomposite; nanocomposite foam; mechanical properties; Biomaterials; Biomaterial;

    Sammanfattning : Today, the majority of materials used for single-use packaging are petroleum-based synthetic polymers. With increased concern about the environmental protection, efforts have been made to develop alternative biodegradable materials from renewable resources. Starch offers an attractive alternative since it is of low cost and abundant. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Transmission Electron Microscopy of Graphene and Hydrated Biomaterial Nanostructures : Novel Techniques and Analysis

    Författare :Sultan Akhtar; Klaus Leifer; Hilborn Jöns; Stefano Rubino; Marco Cantoni; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Graphene flakes; magnetic beads DNA coils; hydrated biomaterials; transmission electron microscopy; focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy; bright-field dark-field imaging; high resolution imaging; electron diffraction and cryogenic temperatures; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Sammanfattning : Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on light element materials and soft matters is problematic due to electron irradiation damage and low contrast. In this doctoral thesis techniques were developed to address some of those issues and successfully characterize these materials at high resolution. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Structure and Dynamics of Hydrated Biopolymers

    Författare :Poornima Ramamohan; Jakob Wohlert; Istvan Furo; Fritjof Nilsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Hydrated Polysaccharides; Molecular Dynamics Simulations; Structure-Function Properties; Convergence of Equilibrium Timescales; Chemical Heterogeneity; Hydrerade polysackarider; molekylära dynamiksimuleringar; struktur- funktionsegenskaper; konvergens av jämviktstidskalor; kemisk heterogenitet; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Sammanfattning : Hydrated polysaccharide systems primarily using xylans along with mutans and alternans were studied using long atomistic simulations over a few microseconds to analyse structure-function relationships and nanoscale interactions with moisture. The influence of various structural and chemical factors such as alignment, nature of glycosidic linkage, effect of moisture / chemical substitutions was explored with a focus on structure-dynamics correlations to aid in the effective functionalisation of biomaterials for the development of a green, circular bioeconomy. 4. 4. Multilayer Structures for Biomaterial Applications : Biomacromolecule-based Coatings

    Författare :Tobias Halthur; Per M. Claesson; Bjørn Stokke; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multilayer; layer-by-layer deposition; physical chemistry; surface chemistry; adsorption; ellipsometry; QCM-D; DPI; protein adsorption; polypeptides; biomaterials; biosurfaces; amelogenin; solid liquid interface; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The cellular response to a biomaterial, such as a dental implant, is mainly governed by the surface properties, and can thus be altered by the introduction of a surface coating. In this thesis the buildup of a biomacromolecule-based coating formed by layerby-layer (LbL) deposition of the charged polypeptides poly(L-lysine) (PLL) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) has been studied.
