1. Myocardial creatine metabolism in experimental infarction and heart failure
Sammanfattning : The failing heart is characterized by changes in structure, function and metabolism. All these changes are usually defined as pathologic remodelling. An important part of this negative remodelling process is disturbances in the myocardial energy metabolism. LÄS MER
2. Myocardial metabolism in experimental infarction and heart failure
Sammanfattning : Abstract The heart is an organ heavily dependent on exogenous lipids for the oxidative production of adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) and therefore maintenance of normal cellular energy homeostasis. However, high energy flux organs such as the heart must closely match lipid import and utilization or otherwise lipids will accumulate in the cardiomyocytes. LÄS MER
3. Skeletal muscle metabolism in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : A study of carbohydrate and fat metabolism
Sammanfattning : In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) deterioration of skeletal muscle metabolism is reported in both respiratory and non-respiratory muscles. This deterioration may contribute to both the development of respiratory failure and general disability often seen in severe COPD patients. LÄS MER
4. Skeletal muscle metabolism in critically ill patients
Sammanfattning : The loss of skeletal muscle mass is of importance for the length of the hospital stay and recovery in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). In the acute illness, the export of amino acids from skeletal muscle provides substrates for vital functions and thus enhances survival. LÄS MER
5. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria.
