1. Mechanical and histological disturbances in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation
Sammanfattning : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish capability and accuracy of speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA), left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function and their correlation with myocardial fibrosis, filling pressure and clinical outcomes in advanced heart failure (HF) patients before and after heart transplantation (HT).I demonstrated that HT recipients had impaired LV twist dynamics in the form of reduced rotation twist angle and untwist rate but time to peak twist was not different from the age matched controls and other cardiac surgical patients. 2. Host ligands and oral bacterial adhesion : studies on phosphorylated polypeptides and gp-340 in saliva and milk
Sammanfattning : Infectious diseases e.g. gastric ulcer, caries and perodontitis, are caused by bacteria in a biofilm. Adhesion of bacteria to host ligands e. LÄS MER
3. Adhesion-related interactions of Actinomyces and Streptococcus biofilm bacteria
Sammanfattning : Adhesion of bacteria is a key event in biofilm formation and is mediated by bacterial adhesins recognising host or bacterial partner receptors. In oral biofilm formation, primary Actinomyces and Streptococcus colonizers adhere to salivary pellicle proteins such as proline-rich proteins (PRPs) as well as to mucosal surfaces. LÄS MER
4. Oral microbiota in relation to host traits, environment, and dental caries
Sammanfattning : Background: Dental caries still appears at high prevalence worldwide. Disease distribution is skewed with more disease in socio-economically weak groups. However, also in populations considered as “low caries” there is a significant fraction with continuous disease development. LÄS MER
5. Signs of inflammation in different types of heart valve disease : The VOCIN study
Sammanfattning : Heart valve dysfunction is a relatively common condition in the population, whereas significant heart valve disease is more unusual. The cause of different types of heart valve disease depends on which valve is concerned. Rheumatic heart valve disease, has for a long time been considered to constitute a post-inflammatory condition. LÄS MER
