1. Development of strategies for construction of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to repeating triads of Cryptococcus neoformans GXM capsular polysaccharide
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the development of methods for synthesis of thioglycoside building blocks corresponding to the repeating units of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen. The building blocks are suitable for construction of large synthetic oligosaccharides related to the native CPS-structures which are to be used in biological studies in order to identify protective epitopes with the aim to develop a glycoconjugate vaccine against C. 2. Alveolar macrophages and lung surfactant in the defense against Cryptococcus neoformans
Sammanfattning : Cryptococcus neoformans causes disease mainly in immunosuppressed patients, especially those with AIDS, and on corticosteroids. The yeast is normally inhaled and the lung is the primary site of infection, where the alveolar macrophages (AM) provide a first line of host defense. LÄS MER
3. Defense and inflammation by alveolar macrophages in response to inhaled fungi
Sammanfattning : Background: Serious fungal infections have increased notably in patients receiving modern treatment like organ transplantation, parenteral nutrition, long term steroid therapy and broad spectrum antibiotics. Patients with HIV infections and drug addicts also contract fungal infections. LÄS MER
4. Deep Candida infections. Serology for laboratory diagnosis and antifungal activity of lactoferrin derived fragments
Sammanfattning : Deep Candida infections (DCI) in patients who are immunocompromised or in intensive care units present both diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Serological tests for diagnosis of invasive fungal infections are used with varying results. Moreover, long term therapies with antifungal agents have led to the emergence of resistant Candida strains. LÄS MER
5. Studies on laboratory diagnosis of fungal infection and antifungal susceptibility
Sammanfattning : Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are serious complications in immunocompromised hosts. Neutropenic patients with haematological malignancies or after transplantation are at risk of developing deep Candida or Aspergillus infections. LÄS MER
