  1. 1. Investigation of immunological preconditions in MS patients "MS immunopathic trait"

    Författare :Sara Haghighi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :multiple sclerosis; siblings; CSF; oligoclonal; cytokine; sulfatide; genetics; trait;

    Sammanfattning : We examined 47 MS patients, 47 healthy siblings and 50 healthy unrelated individuals with blood and CSF analysis and found that 19 % (9/47) of healthy siblings of clinically definite multiple sclerosis patients had an intrathecal immunological reaction to ¡Ý 2 CSF-enriched OCB, in contrast to 4% (2/50) of the unrelated healthy controls. We termed this condition ¡°MS immunopathic trait¡±. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Sound perception and design in multimodal environments

    Författare :PerMagnus Lindborg; Anders K. Friberg; Daniel Västfjäll; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; sound; perception; design; multimodal; environment; soundscape; music; listening; crossmodal; psychoacoustics; psychophysiology; personality trait; emotion; appraisal; aesthetics; colour; correlation; regression; classification; sonification; Tal- och musikkommunikation; Speech and Music Communication;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation is about sound in context. Since sensory processing is inherently multimodal, research in sound is necessarily multidisciplinary. The present work has been guided by principles of systematicity, ecological validity, complementarity of  methods, and integration of science and art. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Quantitative Genetics and Genome Structure in a Wild Population: the Use of a Great Reed Warbler Pedigree

    Författare :Mikael Åkesson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; genome mapping ; AFLP; microsatellite; synteny; heterochiasmy; recombination; chicken; great reed warbler ; bird; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik; Animal ecology; trait correlation ; Djurekologi; animal model ; selection; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; heritability;

    Sammanfattning : Long-term studies of birds play an important role in the understanding of quantitative traits in natural populations. The relative ease by which individual birds can be monitored and caught in the wild enable us collect detailed information from individuals throughout their life time, sometimes from several generations in a population. 4. 4. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient

    Författare :Katarina Olsson; Jon Ågren; Susan Kalisz; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; additive genetic variance; clinal variation; evolutionary constraints; G matrix; genetic correlation; natural selection; pollen limitation; population differentiation; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 5. 5. The links between dispersal and individual fitness: correlation or causality? : Exploring mechanisms using correlative and experimental approaches in a passerine bird species, the collared flycatcher

    Författare :Marion Germain; Lars Gustafsson; Emmanuel Desouhan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Dispersal is commonly defined as the movement of an individual from its natal orprevious breeding site to a new breeding site. Because dispersal involves movements ofindividuals and genes among populations, it is recognized as a key life history trait withstrong effects on many ecological and evolutionary processes such as populationdynamics and genetics but also species spatial distribution or response to brutalenvironmental variations induced by human activities.
