1. Assessment of eosinophil degranulation in allergic diseases and experimental models
Sammanfattning : In allergic disorders, the eosinophilic granulocytes migrate to affected tissues and release granule proteins with cytotoxic, immunoregulatory, and remodeling-promoting properties. Given that degranulation is reflected by a loss in eosinophil granule density of living cells, or by cell membrane rupture and release of intact granules, these morphological changes may represent a biomarker of the allergic disease. 2. Quantitative Genetics and Genome Structure in a Wild Population: the Use of a Great Reed Warbler Pedigree
Sammanfattning : Long-term studies of birds play an important role in the understanding of quantitative traits in natural populations. The relative ease by which individual birds can be monitored and caught in the wild enable us collect detailed information from individuals throughout their life time, sometimes from several generations in a population. 3. Getting to know Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) – a Specialist Host-Alternating Insect with a Tiny Olfactory System
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises ecological, morphological and physiological studies of the carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) with particular focus on olfaction. Data from inventories of winter habitats suggest that T. apicalis prefer Picea abies over Pinus sylvestris and Juniperus communis as winter hosts. LÄS MER
4. Ontogeny and Population Biology of a Sex-Limited Colour Polymorphism
Sammanfattning : This study has involved investigation of number of populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans over several years, looking at frequency changes over time, morphological differences between the sexes and the morphs, differences in growth rate and development time, differences in fecundity between the morphs, and genetic differentiation between populations. 5. The optic tectum of the salmon:site of interaction of neurohormonal photoperiodic and neural visual signals. The GABAergic neuronal system and melatonin receptors
Sammanfattning : Melatonin is a neurohormone which mediates photoperiodic signals from the pineal organ to the brain. GABA (g-aminobutyric acid) is the major inhibitory transmitter in the central nervous system. LÄS MER
