    Sammanfattning : Traditionally, costly experimental procedures have been followed in industry to optimise the machining operations to secure the maximum efficiency in production line, while the functional requirements of the machined surfaces are fulfilled. In recent years, development of robust numerical techniques such as Finite Element Method (FEM) and advances in computing capacity of computers have made it possible to simulate the machining operations under operational conditions.     Sammanfattning : Wear transitions in the wheel–rail contact are of increasing interest since the general trend in railway traffic is toward increased velocities and axle loads. Curving increases the risk of flanging, causing the contact to change from an almost pure rolling wheel tread–rail head contact to more of a sliding wheel flange–rail gauge contact on the high rail in curves.     Sammanfattning : The dust particles generated due to mechanical wear of iron ore pellets and clusters formed in molten stainless steel alloyed with rare earth metals (REM) are considered in this study. Firstly, the influence of the characteristics of iron ore pellets, applied load on a pellet bed and partial reduction of the pellets on the size distribution of the generated dust was investigated.
