Sammanfattning: The dissertation characterises the Swedish architect Agi Lindegren (1858-1927) who practicedarchitecture and design approx. 1886-1908. The introduction provides a general background bydiscussing the relationship between decorative art and architecture. It shows the signal importance ofdecoration in architectural practice in the 19th century. Decoration was considered to serve manypurposes, it gave a building artistic value, and also intellectual content by its symbolic and metaphoric significance, both architecturally, culturally and socially. To create coherency and sense in thedecorative scheme the architects returned to the classical concept of decorum, appropriateness, inwhich hierarchy was an important structuring element reflecting not only social but also structuralconcerns. The main text of thedissertation has a tripartite structure: first it gives a short account ofLindegren's life, second it presents his professional practice from a sociologic viewpoint and third itgives an interpretation of his works.
