16. Novel and ancient technologies for heating and cooling buildings
Sammanfattning : The basic issue of this thesis concerns one of the fundamental problems of the future of our society: How to meet the energy requirements for a large and growing world population while preserving our environment? This question is important for the world and the answers are complex and interwoven.Conventional energy sources, fossil and fissile, are polluting in the present and in the future: they erode the environment and their resources are limited. 17. Manganese Combined Oxides as Oxygen Carriers for Chemical-Looping Combustion
Sammanfattning : The global emissions of greenhouse gases are increasing and the development of mitigation measures is becoming more important. One of the alternatives proposed is carbon capture and storage, where the carbon dioxide emitted from large point sources is captured, compressed and stored in underground storage sites. LÄS MER
18. Studies of Accelerator-Driven Systems for Transmutation of Nuclear Waste
Sammanfattning : Accelerator-driven systems for transmutation of nuclear waste have been suggested as a means for dealing with spent fuel components that pose potential radiological hazard for long periods of time. While not entirely removing the need for underground waste repositories, this nuclear waste incineration technology provides a viable method for reducing both waste volumes and storage times. LÄS MER
19. Groundwater Recharge in Crystalline Bedrock : Processes, Estimation, and Modelling
20. Vision-based Human Detection from Mobile Machinery in Industrial Environments
Sammanfattning : The problem addressed in this thesis is the detection, localisation and tracking of human workers from mobile industrial machinery using a customised vision system developed at Örebro University. Coined the RefleX Vision System, its hardware configuration and computer vision algorithms were specifically designed for real-world industrial scenarios where workers are required to wear protective high-visibility garments with retro-reflective markers.
