1. Studies of Accelerator-Driven Systems for Transmutation of Nuclear Waste
Sammanfattning : Accelerator-driven systems for transmutation of nuclear waste have been suggested as a means for dealing with spent fuel components that pose potential radiological hazard for long periods of time. While not entirely removing the need for underground waste repositories, this nuclear waste incineration technology provides a viable method for reducing both waste volumes and storage times. LÄS MER
2. High-sensitivity Radioactive Xenon Monitoring and High-accuracy Neutron-proton Scattering Measurements
Sammanfattning : Two aspects of applied nuclear physics have been studied in this thesis; Monte Carlo simulations for high-sensitivity monitoring of radioactive xenon and high-accuracy neutron-proton scattering measurements for neutron physics applications and fundamental physics. The Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for two systems for detection of radioactive xenon, using the MCNP code. LÄS MER
3. Novel Diagnostics and Computational Methods of Neutron Fluxes in Boiling Water Reactors
Sammanfattning : The focus in this thesis is to improve knowledge of the BWR related uncertainties void, channel bow, and control rods. The presence of void determines the moderation of neutrons in BWRs. A high void fraction is less efficient in moderating neutrons than a low one. LÄS MER
4. Mixed Beam Dosimetry - From Reactor Core to BNCT Patient
Sammanfattning : Accurate radiation dosimetry is of paramount importance in order to ensure safe delivery of radiotherapy, and for the possibility of meaningful evaluation of clinical trials, as the radiation absorbed dose is correlated to tissue response. The aim of the studies described in this thesis was to investigate and devise novel approaches to mixed beam dosimetry in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). LÄS MER
5. Development and characterization of sensitive, energy-independent solid-state photon dosemeters with high spatial and temporal resolution. Applications in clinical radiology and radiation protection
Sammanfattning : AbstractModern medicine and health care rely on a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and methods that involve ionizing radiation. To guarantee quality and the safety of patients and staff, advanced radiation detectors and dosemeters are needed that have low energy and operate with directional independence for X-ray and γ-ray photons.
