  1. 6. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Författare :Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis. Sammanfattning : Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a severe disease, which originates in blood-forming cells. Although major advances in understanding the biology of AML, the majority of patients eventually succumb to the disease. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Calcium regulation and functions of basic Helix-Loop-Helix transcription factors

    Författare :Juha Saarikettu; Thomas Grundström; Dan Holmberg; Mikael Sigvardsson; Umeå universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : The members of the ubiquitously expressed E-protein subfamily of basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors, E12/E47, SEF2-1 and HEB, have important roles as regulators of gene expression in various differentiation processes, including lymphocyte development and myogenesis. In myogenesis, E-proteins are proposed to function as obligate heterodimer partners for members of the MyoD family of muscle-specific bHLH transcription factors. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Knock Knock Knock, Who is there? - Cell Crosstalk within the Bone Marrow

    Författare :Jenny Stjernberg (Zetterblad); Mikael Sigvardsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Hanna Mikkola; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the subject of cell-cell interaction. Our body is composed of cells, most of them are integrated in a network with other cells that together forms tissues and organs. Every cell type in these complex organs has its special task and location. LÄS MER
