1. Environmentally Degradable Polyethylene : Effects of Additives and Environment on the Degradation and Degradation products
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarises and compares the influences ofdifferent additives (photosensitisers, pro-oxidants, abiodegradable filler) on blown low-density polyethylene (LDPE)films during photo- and thermal degradation with respect tochemical changes in the polymer matrices and identifieddegradation products. Additives studied were irondimethyldithiocarbamate (FeDMC), nickel dibutyldithocarbamate(NiDBC), carbon black, starch, a pro-oxidant that consisted ofmanganese stearate together with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)or natural rubber (NR) and a master batch containing linearLDPE, starch and pro-oxidant. 2. The paradox of micronutrients : in vitro and human studies
Sammanfattning : Many essential micronutrients found in fruits and vegetables exhibit antioxidant properties, protecting against oxidation and oxidative stress. Their ability to react with electrons also enables them to act as pro-oxidants, causing damage opposed to preventing it. LÄS MER
3. Influence of the degradation mechanism on the molecular weight changes for some degradable polymers
Sammanfattning : The influence of degradation mechanism on molecular weightchanges was investigated for certain degradable polymers. Thepolymers investigated were modified low density polyethylene(LDPE), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) and aliphatic polyesters. LÄS MER
4. Gene environment-interaction and cardiovascular phenotype in obesity and diabetes
Sammanfattning : Although a large body of evidence supports the notion that genes determine cardio-metabolic traits and outcomes, the non-genetic regulation of these events has recently gained increasing attention. Plastic chemical modifications of DNA-histone complexes defined epigenetic changes regulate gene expression by modifying chromatin accessibility to transcription factors. LÄS MER
5. From Proteomic Analysis to Biomarker Application - Studies of Carbonyl Reductase in Fish
Sammanfattning : Many anthropogenic substances are present in the aquatic environment, but there is limited information on how this combination of chemicals affects exposed wildlife. To assess the impact of chemicals, a biomarker approach is frequently applied in environmental biomonitoring programmes. LÄS MER
