1. Environmentally Degradable Polyethylene : Effects of Additives and Environment on the Degradation and Degradation products
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarises and compares the influences ofdifferent additives (photosensitisers, pro-oxidants, abiodegradable filler) on blown low-density polyethylene (LDPE)films during photo- and thermal degradation with respect tochemical changes in the polymer matrices and identifieddegradation products. Additives studied were irondimethyldithiocarbamate (FeDMC), nickel dibutyldithocarbamate(NiDBC), carbon black, starch, a pro-oxidant that consisted ofmanganese stearate together with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)or natural rubber (NR) and a master batch containing linearLDPE, starch and pro-oxidant. 2. Oxidative Degradation of Polyethylene - A Cause of Off-flavour
Sammanfattning : Polyethylene is the most frequently used polymer material in food packaging today. The polymer is often processed by film extrusion and extrusion coating between 250°C and 325°C. LÄS MER
3. Heterogeneous Degradation and Recyclability of PP Studied by Imaging Chemiluminescence
Sammanfattning : Oxidative degradation is a serious threat to long-term use and recyclability of polymers. Successful recycling of polymeric quality products requires characterization of the polymer material after reprocessing and use. LÄS MER
4. Colonisation and PAH degradation by wood-rotting fungi in contaminated soil
Sammanfattning : Bioremediation of soils is considered a low-cost alternative to other remediation techniques. Its ability to remove a number of different pollutants has been demonstrated, relying mainly on the activities of indigenous soil bacteria. LÄS MER
5. STUDIES OF FACTORS AFFECTING INTRACELLULAR TOXICITY OF THE SCA7 DISEASE PROTEIN ATAXIN - 7 : FOCUS ON ATAXIN-7 DEGRADATION AND OXIDATIVE STRESS
Sammanfattning : Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is one of nine neurodegenerative disorders caused by expansion of CAG/polyglutamine repeats. Proteins carrying expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) domains are suggested to be resistant to degradation and aggregate. Furthermore, a negative correlation between aggregation and toxicity has been shown. LÄS MER
