6. Productivity and carbon transfer in pelagic food webs in response to carbon, nutrients and light
Sammanfattning : Some of the major problems we face today are human induced changes to the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) cycles. Predicted increases in rainfall and temperature due to climate change, may also increase dissolved organic matter (DOM) inflows to freshwater ecosystems in the boreal zone. LÄS MER
7. Experimental Studies on the Regulation of Pigment Dynamics in Phytoplankton and Copepods by Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the role of dissolved inorganic nutrients in generating changes in phytoplankton community and pigment composition and if such changes can affect the production of the antioxidant astaxanthin in the ecosystem via pelagic copepods. The background of my studies is the possible relationship between eutrophication and a reproductive disturbance in Baltic populations of Atlantic salmon (M74), which is associated with astaxanthin and thiamine deficiencies and oxidative stress. 8. The neglected ecology of the sand goby: Abundance and feeding in the Baltic sublittoral
Sammanfattning : I investigated the ecology and population density of the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, at sub-thermocline depth in the north-western Baltic proper. Most previous research on the sand goby, and the co-occurring closely related common goby, P. LÄS MER
9. Grazer-induced responses in marine phytoplankton
Sammanfattning : Phytoplankton are the most important primary producers in the world’s oceans, yet little is known of how they avoid the constant threats from the pelagic grazers. From land it is well known that plants defend themselves by having thorns or producing compounds unpalatable to grazers. LÄS MER
10. Spring dynamics in shallow lakes: the role of plankton, fish and macrophytes in a changing climate
Sammanfattning : Shallow lakes such as Lake Krankesjön are characterized by their extended littoral zones, usually covered by submersed and emergent vegetation. In paper 1, I investigated the relationship between turbidity and macrophyte growth (Chara spp. LÄS MER
