  1. 1. Microwave-assisted transformations of lignin for value-added material applications

    Författare :Jenevieve G. Yao; Minna Hakkarainen; Karin Odelius; Monika Österberg; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :lignin; microwave-assisted processes; organosolv fractionation; esterification; fused filament fabrication; digital light processing; lignin; mikrovågsassisterade strategier; organosolv-fraktionering; förestring; additiv tillverkning; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Sammanfattning : The chemical diversity and structural complexity of lignin, an abundant biopolymer found in vascular plants, present a multitude of opportunities for the modification and fine-tuning of its properties to suit downstream demands. In this thesis, microwave-assisted strategies were explored as efficient and environment-friendly pathways for lignin valorization towards value-added material applications. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Potential of Organosolv Lignin Nanoparticles as a Sustainable Flotation Reagent : Towards a Low-Carbon Footprint Mining Industry

    Författare :Katerina Hruzova; Ulrika Rova; Saija Luukkanen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Organosolv lignin particles; Nanoparticles; Flotation reagent; Copper recovery; Biokemisk processteknik; Biochemical Process Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : The green transition is driving a steep increase in the demand for minerals, which has put the focus on more responsible and sustainable mining practices as there is a growing pressure on mining operations to minimise their environmental footprint, mitigate risks in neighbouring communities, and decrease the consumption of natural resources. In 2022, mineral froth flotation was used to recover 18 million tonnes of copper from copper ore, accounting for 80% of total copper mine output. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Unlocking the Potential of Brewer’s Spent Grain : Sustainable Biorefinery Approach and Value-Added Product Generation

    Författare :Mohsen Parchami; Mohammad J Taherzadeh; Sudip Rakshit; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Brewer s spent grain; Hydrothermal pretreatment; Organosolv pretreatment; Edible filamentous fungi; Anaerobic digestion; Biorefinery; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Sammanfattning : Brewer’s spent grain (BSG) constitutes 85% of brewing byproducts and 30% of initial malt. In 2021, BSG production reached approximately 37.2 million tons. Owing to its high moisture and nutritional content, BSG is prone to biological deterioration, causing environmental issues when discarded as waste. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Production and transformation of organic compounds from renewable feedstock : Catalytic approaches

    Författare :Elena Subbotina; Joseph Samec; Pieter Bruijnincx; Stockholms universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the development of strategies for lignocellulosic biomass valorization. The thesis consists of two parts.The first part of the presented work is related to the catalytic fractionation of biomass (lignin-first approach) and the production of monomeric compounds from lignocellulose. 5. 5. Catalytic valorization of lignocellulose : Direct and sidestream upgrading approaches

    Författare :Davide Di Francesco; Joseph Samec; Orlando Rojas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lignin; biomass; catalytic fractionation; dearomatization; heterogeneous catalysis; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : This work aims to explore different approaches for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass. In this regard, two different strategies are presented: the catalytic upgrading of lignocellulose derivatives from industrial streams, such as pyrolytic oil and kraft lignin, and the direct catalytic fractionation of woody biomass.
