1. On the use of radiography and radiation dose consideration in orthodontic treatment
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to analyse the use of radiography and radiation risk associated with orthodontic treatment. Study I measured absorbed doses to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck in an anthropomorphic phantom head using thermo¬luminescent dosimeters (TLDs) from digital intra-oral and panoramic radiography. 2. Probabilistic treatment planning based on dose coverage : How to quantify and minimize the effects of geometric uncertainties in radiotherapy
Sammanfattning : Traditionally, uncertainties are handled by expanding the irradiated volume to ensure target dose coverage to a certain probability. The uncertainties arise from e.g. the uncertainty in positioning of the patient at every fraction, organ motion and in defining the region of interests on the acquired images. LÄS MER
3. Applications of organ culture of the mouse inner ear
Sammanfattning : The embryonic mouse inner ear was used as a model with which to study ototoxicity and tissue interactions. The inner ear anlage can be explanted and cultured in vitro from about the 12th gestational day (gd), and will differentiate parallel with the inner ear developing in vivo until a time corresponding to birth (21st gd). 4. Mathematical Modelling of Dose Planning in High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy
Sammanfattning : Cancer is a widespread type of diseases that each year affects millions of people. It is mainly treated by chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy, or a combination of them. One modality of radiation therapy is high dose-rate brachytherapy, used in treatment of for example prostate cancer and gynecologic cancer. LÄS MER
5. Improved dose response modeling for normal tissue damage and therapy optimization
Sammanfattning : The present thesis is focused on the development and application of dose response models for radiation therapy. Radiobiological models of tissue response to radiation are an integral part of the radiotherapeutic process and a powerful tool to optimize tumor control and minimize damage to healthy tissues for use in clinical trials.
