  1. 1. Exploring the Universe Using Neutrinos : A Search for Point Sources in the Southern Hemisphere Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

    Författare :Rickard Ström; Allan Hallgren; Olga Botner; Chad Finley; Lawrence R. Sulak; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astroparticle physics; neutrino sources; neutrino telescopes; IceCube; Fysik med inriktning mot elementarpartikelfysik; Physics with specialization in Elementary Particle Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrinos are the ideal cosmic messengers, and can be used to explore the most powerful accelerators in the Universe, in particular the mechanisms for producing and accelerating cosmic rays to incredible energies. By studying clustering of neutrino candidate events in the IceCube detector we can discover sites of hadronic acceleration. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Indirect Searches for Dark Matter in the Milky Way with IceCube-DeepCore

    Författare :Martin Wolf; Chad Finley; Maurizio Spurio; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dark Matter Annihilation; WIMP; Milky Way; IceCube Neutrino Observatory; DeepCore; neutrino; particle physics; high-energy physics; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Many astronomical observations, including rotational curve measurements of stars and the analysis of the cosmic microwave background, suggest the existence of an invisible matter density content in the Universe, commonly called Dark Matter (DM). Possibly, DM could be of particle nature, where Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) could be a viable DM candidate. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Investigating the potential of current and future neutrino detectors to identify the sources of the astrophysical neutrinos seen by IceCube

    Författare :Maryon Ahrens; Chad Finley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : High energy neutrino astronomy aims to view the universe with a new messenger, the neutrino. This messenger provides another window onto the universe, complementing what we can learn from photons, cosmic rays, and gravitational waves. LÄS MER

  4. 4. A Search for Neutrinos from Cosmic Point Sources using AMANDA-B10 with Emphasis on Limit Calculation Techniques

    Författare :Jan Conrad; Allan Hallgren; Olga Botner; Gregory W. Sullivan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik;

    Sammanfattning : A search for cosmic point sources of neutrinos has been performed using data taken in 1999 with the AMANDA-B10 neutrino telescope. This work describes methods for signal and background separation and the statistical analysis of the final data sample. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The Sun as a laboratory for particle physics

    Författare :Carl Niblaeus; Joakim Edsjö; Chad Finley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Sammanfattning : In the paper attached to this thesis, Paper I, we have calculated the flux of neutrinos that emanate from cosmic ray collisions in the solar atmosphere. These neutrinos are created in the cascades that follow the primary collision and can travel from their production point to a detector on Earth, interacting with the solar material and oscillating on the way.
