1. Analytical approaches to the study of mucin glycosylation
Sammanfattning : Mucins constitute the major protein component of the mucus layer, which covers the epithelial surfaces of the respiratory, the gastrointestinal and the genitourinary tracts. Mucins carry O-linked oligosaccharides which contribute to the molecule by 50-80 weight percent, and these can be highly diverse, with 50-150 different oligosaccharides found on a purified mucin population. 2. Interactions of Mucins with Biopolymers and Drug Delivery Particles
Sammanfattning : The main components in the mucous gels apart from water are mucins, which are proteins with high molecular weights and an abundance of negatively charged oligosaccharide side chains. The aim of the investigations was to characterize interactions between mucins and other proteins that are present in the mucous gel, and also between mucins and components used in pharmaceutical formulations. 3. Properties of Interfacial Proteinaceous Films with Emphasis on Oral Systems
Sammanfattning : The present thesis addresses three issues related to proteinaceous films at solid/liquid interfaces: adsorption, lubrication and enzymatic interactions. Most of the work has been devoted to oral systems. In addition, gelatin has been investigated as a model protein. LÄS MER
4. The Role of FCGBP in Mucus - Structure, Processing and Function
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, a bottom-up approach was used to study the IgG Fc-binding protein (FCGBP), which next to the MUC2 mucin is the second main component of secreted mucus in small intestine and colon. FCGBP is also found in airways during inflammatory conditions with static mucus. LÄS MER
5. Mucins, Cystic Fibrosis and PDZ protein interactions
Sammanfattning : Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is caused and characterized by mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene. The dominating feature of the disease is mucus accumulation on mucosal surfaces, but no direct functional connection between mucus and CFTR is known. LÄS MER
