21. Genetic Disequilibria and the Interpretation of Population Genetic Structure in Daphnia
Sammanfattning : Understanding the processes that shape the spatial distribution of genetic variation within species is central to the evolutionary study of diversification and demography. Neutral genetic variation reflects past demographic events as well as current demographic characteristics of populations, and the correct interpretation of genetic data requires that the relative impact of these forces can be identified. 22. Assessing inbreeding and loss of genetic variation in canids, domestic dog (Canis familiaris) and wolf (Canis lupus), using pedigree data
Sammanfattning : Genetic variation is necessary to maintain the ability of wild and domestic populations to genetically adapt to changed selective pressures. When relationships among individuals are known, conservation genetic management can be based on statistical pedigree analysis. LÄS MER
23. Physical and biological dispersal barriers in invasive, bloom-forming microalgae
Sammanfattning : For a long time microorganisms were assumed to have unlimited dispersal due to their small size and high cell numbers. Most microbial species can be transported by water currents, in water droplets by wind and attached to other organisms. LÄS MER
24. Hereditary Breast Cancer in South Sweden. Early findings from studies on the role of BRCA1
Sammanfattning : The thesis presents the results from investigations into the role of BRCA1 in hereditary cancer in South Sweden. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) studies found loss of the wildtype allele of BRCA1 to be common in BRCA1 associated breast cancer, but due to the high degree of LOH on chr. LÄS MER
25. Causes and consequences of niche differentiation between color morphs of pygmy grasshoppers
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I used the color polymorphic pygmy grasshopper, Tetrix subulata, as a model system in order to investigate the degree of niche differentiation between alternative color morphs that are present within a single population. First, I hypothesized that individuals belonging to different color morphs differ in their innate food preference due to somewhat dissimilar physiology, and in their actual food consumption due in part to differential habitat use.
