1. Expanding the Chlamydiae tree : Insights into genome diversity and evolution
Sammanfattning : Chlamydiae is a phylum of obligate intracellular bacteria. They have a conserved lifecycle and infect eukaryotic hosts, ranging from animals to amoeba. Chlamydiae includes pathogens, and is well-studied from a medical perspective. LÄS MER
2. The evolution of the nuclear envelope
Sammanfattning : The nucleus is one of the defining features of eukaryotes and the question of its origin is intimately linked to the evolution of the eukaryotic cell. It is delimited by a double lipid bilayer called the nuclear envelope, which separates the nuclear interior from the cytoplasm. LÄS MER
3. Mitochondrial and Eukaryotic Origins : A Phylogenetic Perspective
Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are eukaryotic cellular organelles responsible for power-generation, believed to have come into existence by an endo-symbiontic event where a bacterial cell was incorporated by an un-specified "proto-eukaryote". Phylogenetic analysis have shown that the mitochondrial ancestor was most related to present-day alpha-proteobacteria, although the exact nature of the mitochondrial progenitor remains disputed. 4. Microbial evolution: patterns of diversity in aquatic protists
Sammanfattning : Little is known about how microbes diversify in nature. In contrast to the more studied multicellular organisms, microbes can have a) huge population sizes, b) high reproductive rates and c) long-distance dispersal. These characteristics can affect their tempo and mode of diversification in ways that still need to be understood. LÄS MER
5. Resolving deep nodes of eukaryote phylogeny
Sammanfattning : My thesis aims to solve deep nodes in the eukaryote tree of life (eToL), by developing new data sets and new approaches to analysing them. In paper I, I described a dataset of 76 universal eukaryotic proteins of bacterial descent (euBacs), in order to test the relations among the three main divisions of mitochondriate eukaryotes (Amorphea, Diaphretickes and Discoba).
