21. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. LÄS MER
22. Human amnion epithelial stem cells as a therapy for liver disease
Sammanfattning : Placenta-derived stem cells have been proposed as potential new treatments for acute and congenital liver diseases. Of all the different perinatal tissues, amnion membrane and isolated amnion epithelial cells have been shown to be an outstanding readily available source of multipotent stem cells. LÄS MER
23. Chemokines and their role in dopaminergic development
Sammanfattning : The main pathological hallmark in Parkinson s disease (PD) is the progressive loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra (SN), affecting movements such as walking, talking and writing. Today, there is no cure available for PD and existing treatments only provide symptomatic relief, but the prospect of using stem cell based cell replacement therapies for patients with PD have provided new optimism. 24. The role of T-type calcium channels in human pancreatic β cell maturity
Sammanfattning : This PhD work has optimized a series of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro approaches to recapitulate, intervene and appraise in vivo maturation of naïve β cells within human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived islets (hiPSC-islets). These approaches have also been applied to characterize hyperglycemia-induced dedifferentiation of mature β cells within native human islets grafted into the anterior chamber of the eye (ACE) of immunodeficient mice. 25. Experimental studies of human fetal liver cells : in regard to in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Sammanfattning : Successful in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents a potential step forward in the management of patients with severe inherited hematological, metabolic and immunological disorders. Animal data from a number of species have demonstrated evidence of engraftment, but to date the only effective in utero transplantations (IUTx) in humans have been performed in fetuses with severe immunodeficiencies, suggesting that the fetal immune system play a vital role in the success or failure of in utero transplantation.
