16. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in preterm infants: new mechanistic insights and potential treatment strategies
Sammanfattning : Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the major co-morbidities of premature birth associated with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) development, long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, behavioral problems, special educational needs, and dependency on social security.Hypothesis and aims: We believe that extravasated blood and further release of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) are crucial in brain injury following IVH and consequent development of PHVD. 17. Stress-induced cardiomyopathy - clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Background: Stress-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is an acute cardiac condition with akinesia in the left ventricle (LV) that can be severe. A stress-trigger, physical or emotional, is usually identified preceding onset of symptoms and catecholamine overstimulation is involved in the pathogenesis of SIC. LÄS MER
18. Monitoring of extracellular substances after spontaneous and experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : Even though survival is considerably enhanced after surgical treatment of an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), there is a critical period, which keeps the patient in intensive care for days or even weeks. Complications, such as vasospasm, ischemia and brain edema ultimately lead to further brain damage. LÄS MER
19. Metabolic and Endocrine Response in the Acute Stage of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : The rupture of an aneurysm in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a dramatic event causing a severe impact on the brain and a transient or permanent ischemic condition. Several types of responses to meet the challenges of SAH have been found in the acute phase, including activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, elevated levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and disturbances in cerebral and systemic metabolism. 20. Pathophysiology of subarachnoid hemorrhage in the rat
Sammanfattning : Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) causes brain damage, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. An obstacle in SAH research is the lack of an adequate animal model. In this thesis, we developed a new approach to simulate SAH that involves the injection of blood into the prechiasmatic cistern of the rat. LÄS MER
