  1. 1. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in preterm infants: new mechanistic insights and potential treatment strategies

    Författare :Olga Romantsik; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prematurity; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; White matter injury; Gray matter injury; Preterm rabbits; Extracellular hemoglobin; a-1-microglobulin; animal IVH models; High frequency ultrasound; MRI; corticogenesis;

    Sammanfattning : Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the major co-morbidities of premature birth associated with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) development, long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, behavioral problems, special educational needs, and dependency on social security.Hypothesis and aims: We believe that extravasated blood and further release of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) are crucial in brain injury following IVH and consequent development of PHVD. 2. 2. Surfactant treatment in neonatal group B streptococcal pneumonia : experimental and clinical studies

    Författare :Egbert Herting; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Surfactant dysfunction is probably involved in the pathophysiology of neonatal group B streptococcal (GBS) pneumonia. Aim of the present studies was to evaluate efficacy and safety of surfactant replacement therapy for term and preterm neonates with severe respiratory failure due to GBS infection. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Direct and phagocyte-mediated lipid peroxidation of lung surfactant by group B streptococci and other bacteria : protective effect of antioxidants

    Författare :Rabea K L Bouhafs; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Lung surfactant; lipid peroxidation; phagocytes; group B streptococci; lung infection; superoxide; nitric oxide; reactive oxygen species and antioxidants.;

    Sammanfattning : Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), caused by surfactant deficiency, is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm neonates. Further, infants with systemic neonatal infection or pneumonia often have signs of RDS. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Mechanisms of Lung Injury in a Mouse Model of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

    Författare :Anna Hogmalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :bronchopulmonary dysplasia; transgenic mice; inflammation; lung; interleukin-1; αvβ6 integrin; mmp-9; surfactant;

    Sammanfattning : Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease that affects preterm infants. Increased levels of inflammatory mediators in the amniotic fluid and in the lungs of preterm infants are associated with the development of BPD. LÄS MER
