11. The use of protein biomarkers in ecotoxicology : Studies of oxidative and genotoxic stress in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
Sammanfattning : Many environmental pollutants, heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) among them, are toxic by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress may be defined as a state in an organism when its inherent capacity to handle oxyradicals is surpassed, and it may result in peroxidation of lipids, and damage to proteins and DNA. 12. Protein adducts in plasma as biomarkers of exposure to and risk of organic acid anhydrides
Sammanfattning : Organic acid anhydrides (OAAs) are important industrial chemicals but also potent inducers of airways diseases. Many exposed workers develop specific IgE and IgG antibodies. Hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) are two particularly sensitising OAAs. LÄS MER
13. Biomarkers aiming at cancer risk estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Sammanfattning : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), a family of compounds that are formed in incomplete combustion of organic matter, occur as general pollutants in air and food. Exposure to PAH is, according to preliminary estimates, associated with non-acceptable cancer risks showing the need for improved data to be used in risk estimation. LÄS MER
14. Quantitative analysis of DNA adducts formed by some epoxides of industrial importance
Sammanfattning : The work presented herein has focused on DNA adduct formation by three industrial epoxides, allyl glycidyl ether, propylene oxide and epichlorohydrin. Epoxides, owing to the strained oxirane ring are chemically reactive and can alkylate various sites in DNA. LÄS MER
15. Biomonitoring of epichlorohydrin and some related compounds
Sammanfattning : This thesis considers epichlorohydrin (ECH), an important industrial chemical, that has been shown to be a carcinogen in experimental animals. The aim of this work is to improve the scientific basis for risk estimation of ECH and to suggest a reliable biomonitoring method for exposure. LÄS MER
