11. Pathways linking atherosclerosis to aortic stenosis
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death world-wide where atherosclerosis is the main culprit and aortic valve disease accounts about two percent of all CVD deaths. Atherosclerosis is a lipid and inflammation driven disease that share many features with aortic valve stenosis (AVS). LÄS MER
12. Insights into left atrial response to pressure and volume overload
Sammanfattning : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish the ability of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA) response to pressure and volume overload respectively in aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting LA and right ventricular (RV) fibrosis in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) undergoing heart transplantation (HTx).I demonstrated that assessment of left ventricular (LV) long axis systolic velocity and amplitude of excursion is more sensitive than simple determination of ejection fraction (EF) for revealing the beneficial impact of MR surgery on overall LV systolic performance. 13. Cardiac function and long-term volume load : Physiological investigations in endurance athletes and in patients operated on for aortic regurgitation
Sammanfattning : Background and aims. The heart is a remarkably adaptable organ, continuously changing its output to match metabolic demands and haemodynamic load. But also in long-term settings, such as in chronic or repeated volume load, there are changes in cardiac dimensions and mass termed cardiac hypertrophy. LÄS MER
14. Aortic valve surgery: Clinical studies after autograft, homograft and prosthetic valve replacement
Sammanfattning : Aortic Valve Surgery Clinical studies after autograft, homograft and prosthetic valve replacement Obaid Aljassim, MD Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Anaesthesia, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg Introduction and Aims: Aortic valve disease in symptomatic adult patients often requires surgery. Several alternatives are available: repair, mechanical and biological prostheses, homograft and the Ross procedure. LÄS MER
15. Vascular function in bicuspid aortic valve disease
Sammanfattning : The aortic valve normally consists of three cusps (tricuspid aortic valve, TAV), but in 0.5-2% of the population it consists of only two cusps (bicuspid aortic valve, BAV), which is the most common congenital cardiac malformation. LÄS MER
