1. Benthic environmental responses to climatic changes during the late Quaternary: a micropalaeontological and geochemical approach
Sammanfattning : There is a limited understanding of how the benthic environment within upwelling regions responded to past rapid climatic changes. Within this thesis, a multiproxy approach is applied to two marine sediment cores from two coastal upwelling sites in the low latitude subtropical Atlantic. LÄS MER
2. Air-Sea Fluxes of CO2 : Analysis Methods and Impact on Carbon Budget
Sammanfattning : Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important greenhouse gas, and the atmospheric concentration of CO2 has increased by more than 100 ppm since prior to the industrial revolution. The global oceans are considered an important sink of atmospheric CO2, since approximately one third of the anthropogenic emissions are absorbed by the oceans. LÄS MER
3. Effects of coastal forcing on turbulence and boundary-layer structure
Sammanfattning : Coastal mountains of significant elevation impose constraints for the surrounding flow. The aim of this study is to describe the modifications of the marine atmospheric boundary layer that occur offshore of the west coast of the United States. Aircraft measurements, up to 1000 km off the coast from two experiments, are used. LÄS MER
4. Physical control of phytoplankton growth in the Baltic Sea : a multitude of spatio-temporal scales
Sammanfattning : Shipboard systems have been used for concurrent quasi-continuous measurements ofparticle size distribution, Chi fluorescence, salt and temperature and meteorologicalparameters. A resolution from 100 m to basin-wide, supplemented with variousmeasurements at fixed stations made it possible to investigate biological- physical couplingsduring the vernal phytoplankton bloom of the two years 1985/86 and in a coastal area ofthe Baltic Sea. 5. The role of Southern Ocean fronts in the global climate system
Sammanfattning : The location of fronts has a direct influence on both the physical and biological processes in the Southern Ocean. However, until recently fronts have been poorly resolved by available data and climate models. LÄS MER
