7. Estrogen receptor and multixenobiotic resistance genes in freshwater fish and snails: identification and expression analysis after pharmaceutical exposure
Sammanfattning : Pharmaceuticals are today released into aquatic environments where they can interfere with organisms' biological processes. The general research objective was to analyze how aquatic freshwater organisms are affected by exposure to pharmaceuticals that are categorized by the EU as potential risk factors to the environment (i.e. LÄS MER
8. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 9. Warmer and browner waters: fish responses vary with size, sex, and species
Sammanfattning : Current understanding of fish population responses to climate change is often limited to studies on the effect of temperature, ignoring potential co-occurring changes in other environmental variables. However, next to getting warmer, temperate and boreal aquatic systems are getting browner due to increased concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. LÄS MER
10. Habitat use in fish communities : size- and environment-dependent mechanisms affecting biotic interactions and population regulation
Sammanfattning : Through the influence of abiotic factors, the habitat use of organisms affects their metabolism as well as other species- and size-dependent individual-based rates. The habitat-specific performances of individuals interacting in different habitats thereby affect biotic interactions. LÄS MER
