11. Theoretical Studies of Protein-Ligand Interactions
Sammanfattning : The protein-ligand interaction is an important issue in rational drug design and protein function research. This thesis focuses on the study of protein-ligand interactions using various molecular modeling methods, which are used in combination to predict the binding modes and calculate the binding free energies of several important protein-ligand systems, as summarized below. 13. Maf transcription factors in beta cell function
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder caused by a defect or lack of beta cell-produced insulin that controls blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to glucose, insulin secretion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as well as monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. 14. Pamoplantar Pustulosis. Pathogenetic Studies with Special Reference to the Role of Nicotine
Sammanfattning : Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic disease of unknown pathogenesis. Most of the patients were smokers. High prevalence of a number of autoimmune diseases was observed among the patients (thyroid disease 14%, gluten intolerance 8%, diabetes type 1 3%). Eosinophils and neutrophils were found in large numbers in the pustules. LÄS MER
15. Distribution and function of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in glia cells and neurons with focus on the neuroprotective mechanisms of cholesterol lowering drugs in Alzheimer's disease
Sammanfattning : Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in the regulation of many processes including synapses regeneration, neurotransmission and neuroprotection in the central nervous system (CNS). There is increasing evidence for the disturbances in nAChRs in Alzheimer's disease (AD). LÄS MER
