  1. 16. Energy based surgical instruments : With particular focus on collateral thermal injury

    Författare :Johan Carlander; Kenth Johansson; Leif Bergkvist; Oliver Gimm; Martin Almquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Iatrogenic post-operative nerve dysfunction is a significant problem in many areas of surgery and can be caused by collateral thermal injury from activation of energy based surgical devices (EBD).The aims of this thesis were to: create an animal model in order to compare mono- and bipolar electrosurgery (ES) and an ultrasonic dissection (UD) with regard to collateral thermal nerve injury, and with data of a national multicenter register to study the use of EBD and their potential effects on operation time and complication rates in thyroid surgery. 2. 17. On the interaction between a neuromuscular blocking agent and regulation of breathing during hypoxia

    Författare :Nicholas Wyon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neuromuscular block; TOF ratio; vecuronium; ventilatory response; chemoreceptors; carotid body;

    Sammanfattning : It was previously generally agreed that a mechanical train-of-four (TOF) ratio >0.70 represented an adequate recovery of respiratory function after neuromuscular blockade. Normal respiratory parameters at this level of recovery and during air breathing support this view. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Nitric Oxide in the Inner Ear with Particular Regard to Neurotansmission and Pharmacotherapy

    Författare :Raul Popa; Diana Berggren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorhinolaryngologi; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorhinolaryngologi; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Research into nitric oxide (NO) in the inner ear has expanded explosively during recent years. There is evidence that NO is present in the various cochlear structures and its action is involved in physiological mechanisms, such as neurotransmission, and in pathological processes, e.g. ototoxicity. 4. 19. Environmental factors and risk of acoustic neuroma

    Författare :David Pettersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to increase the knowledge about environmental risk factors of acoustic neuroma and to increase the understanding of the methodological problems encountered when studying this tumor. Acoustic neuroma is a benign, usually slow growing, intracranial tumor of the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII), the nerve that transmits information about hearing and balance from the inner ear to the brain. 5. 20. Effects of virus infection and interferon-y on the development of the neuromuscular junction in vitro

    Författare :Sofija Kelic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Normal development of the nervous system depends upon complex interactions between cells and their local environment. These interactions may be disturbed by toxic and infectious agents. It is well known that such agents can cause malformations, due to interference with neural tube formation or neuronal proliferation and migration. LÄS MER
