16. The juvenile three-spined stickleback : model organism for the study of estrogenic and androgenic endocrine disruption in laboratory and field
Sammanfattning : Industrial and domestic sewage effluents have been found to cause reproductive disorders in wild fish, often as a result of the interference of compounds in the effluents with the endocrine system. This thesis describes laboratory-based exposure experiments and a field survey that were conducted with juveniles of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus. LÄS MER
17. Biogas production from lignocellulosic materials : microbial community structure
Sammanfattning : Lignocellulosic materials such as agricultural plant residues are widely available in large amounts and can be used for production of biogas without the risk of competition for arable land. However, the intricate structure of lignocellulose, a major component of the plant cell wall, limits microbial degradation and consequently results in low degradation rate and low biogas yield. 18. Climate change time machine : Adaptation to 30 years of warming in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Earth mean surface temperature has increased by 1 °C since the industrial revolution, and this has already had considerable effects on animal and plant species. Ecological responses to the warming climate – often facilitated via phenotypic plasticity – are ubiquitous. LÄS MER
19. A window into forest landscapes : Studying the relationship between forests, ownership, ecosystem services, and biodiversity in landscapes
Sammanfattning : Production forests are faced with the challenge of adapting to environmental change and simultaneously helping mitigate it and host rich biodiversity. This leads to new conflicts and trade-offs for forest management. Many management options have been proposed to achieve these goals while minimizing the loss of timber production. LÄS MER
20. Diversifying crop rotations for sustainable production and climate change adaptation
Sammanfattning : Industrial cropping systems are increasingly simplified, with fewer crops being grown, requiring extensive use of inputs, and contributing to environmental pollution and climate change. Solutions are needed to reduce the negative effects, while retaining productivity in the face of increasingly frequent detrimental climatic conditions. LÄS MER
