1. Dietary fat as an exposure in epidemiological studies. Observations in the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort
Sammanfattning : The aim was to explore the inherent meaning of total fat and to examine the associations between relative fat intake and postmenopausal breast cancer. Furthermore, the impacts of the alterations in dietary assessment routines are discussed. This thesis uses data from the Malmö Diet and Cancer study, a prospective cohort study. LÄS MER
2. Early life influences on adult organ function, health and disease, including data from Swedish population-based cohorts
Sammanfattning : Prenatal insults or adverse events during the in-utero period may lead to suboptimal function of adult organs because of the impairment of critical organ development and growth, as linked to lower birth weight. This may ultimately predispose the individual to the later onset of some diseases in adulthood, a process known as Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). LÄS MER
3. Clinical and epidemiologic aspects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Special emphasis on cardiovascular outcome and risk factors
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease, with an increased risk of co-morbidity from cardiovascular disease (CVD), in particular among those with severe disease. Environmental risk factors are of potential interest for both prevention and treatment of RA. LÄS MER
4. Cardiovascular disease and adrenergic dysfunction in mild primary hyperparathyroidism
Sammanfattning : Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and premature death, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. The aim of this thesis was to investigate cardiovascular parameters and adrenergic function in mild PHPT compared to healthy controls subjects before and after curative parathyroidectomy (PTX). 5. Absorbed Dose Determination and Characteristics of Degraded Electron Beams: Application to Intraoperative Radiation Therapy
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work was to quantify limitations of and uncertainties in commonly used dosimetric techniques for relative absorbed dose determination in degraded electron beams, such as those encountered in intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and small-electron-field radiotherapy. Three different detector types were investigated with regard to measurements of output factors and relative absorbed dose distributions: (1) a parallel-plate ionization chamber, (2) a p-type silicon diode detector and (3) a diamond detector.
