  1. 11. Long Term Studies of Insect Abundances in Temporary Wetlands in Relation to Hydrology, Predation and Bti

    Författare :Thomas Persson Vinnersten; Jan O Lundström; Örjan Östman; William Walton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; floodwater mosquitoes; mosquito control; predation; aquatic insects;

    Sammanfattning : Long-term insect abundances have been studied to investigate factors structuring the insect communities of the temporary wetlands around the River Dalälven floodplain. In the wet meadows and swamps in the River Dalälven floodplains recurrent floods are the ultimate prerequisite for high production of floodwater mosquitoes. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Get a grip on chaos : Tailored measures for complex systems on surfaces

    Författare :Sascha Firle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum chemistry; complex systems; chaos; predator prey; movement models; functional response; spatial heterogeneity; topological dynamics; braid template; homoclinic bifurcations; Kvantkemi; Quantum chemistry; Kvantkemi; Quantum Chemistry; kvantkemi;

    Sammanfattning : Complex systems are ubiquitous in physics, biology and mathematics. This thesis is concerned with describing and understanding complex systems. Some new concepts about how large systems can be viewed in a lower dimensional framework are proposed. The systems presented are examples from ecology and chemistry. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Mosquitoes as a Part of Wetland Biodiversity

    Författare :Martina Schäfer; Jacob Höglund; Jan Lundström; Darold Batzer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; diversity patterns; species assemblages; functional groups; constructed wetlands; dytiscids; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Wetlands contain both aquatic and terrestrial environments which generates high biodiversity. However, they are commonly associated with mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), and mosquitoes are usually regarded as negative by humans because they can cause nuisance and transmit diseases. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Olfactory genomics of bark- and ambrosia beetles : Evolution and function of chemoreceptors

    Författare :Twinkle Biswas; Feromongruppen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Curculionidae; functional characterisation; odorant receptors ORs ; gustatory receptors; ionotropic receptors; orthologues; paralogues; olfactory sensory neurons; OR-ligand interaction;

    Sammanfattning : Insect behaviours, such as host and mate selection, are often mediated by chemical cues. The chemical cuesare detected by large and rapidly evolving families of chemoreceptors which include odorant receptors (ORs),gustatory receptors (GRs) and ionotropic receptors (IRs). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Population biology and conservation of beetles and pseudoscorpions associated with hollow oaks

    Författare :Thomas Ranius; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systematic zoology; wood mould; tree hollow; pseudoscorpion; population variability; Osmoderma eremita; metapopulation; mark-recapture; habitat fragmentation; genetic structure; dispersal; beetle; computer simulation; taxonomy; zoogeography; Zoologisk systematik; djurgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Many species associated with old trees are threatened, as this habitat has decreased severely in Europe during the last 200 years. In old oaks, hollows with wood mould often form in the trunks and these harbour a specialized fauna mainly consisting of beetles, flies and pseudoscorpions. LÄS MER
