  1. 6. Avian thermoregulation across age and seasons

    Författare :Fredrik Andreasson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ambient temperature; body temperature; Cyanistes caeruleus; energy expenditure; hypothermia; life-history theory; metabolic rate; Parus major; thermoregulation; trade-off; winter ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Animals constantly need to relate to prevailing environmental conditions and regulate their body temperature accordingly. Body temperature regulation in birds and mammals is inherently linked to energy expenditure and, thus, thermoregulation is a physiological mechanism that could trade-off with other costly processes, with potential long-term fitness consequences. 2. 7. Fuel and fly: adaptations to endurance exercise in migrating birds

    Författare :Anders Kvist; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; water balance; flight power; phenotypic flexibility; energy assimilation; basal metabolism; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Birds on migration alternate between consuming fuel stores during flights and accumulating fuel stores during stopovers. This thesis highlights some of the ways in which migrating birds have adapted to the different demands of fuelling and flight. Most of the time on migration is spent at stopover sites accumulating fuel stores. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Molecular evidence for metazooplankton feeding on filamentous cyanobacteria and picocyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Nisha Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Agneta Andersson; Jakob Walve; Karolina Ininbergs; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Interactions between zooplankton and cyanobacteria are complex and system-specific. They play an important role in mediating responses of phytoplankton to changes in nutrient regime and top-down manipulations. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Significance of N2 fixing planktonic symbioses for open ocean ecosystems

    Författare :Marcus Stenegren; Rachel A. Foster; Agneta Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen fixation; diazotrophs; symbiosis; DDA; cyanobacteria; qPCR; piecewise SEM; microarray; tropics; subtropics; marine; open ocean; Richelia; Calothrix; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixers, also called diazotrophs, are able to reduce atmospheric N2 into bioavailable nitrogen, giving them an advantage in open ocean regions with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. The focus of this thesis are three lineages of symbiotic heterocystous filamentous types (het-1, het-2 and het-3), that associate with several genera of microalgae called diatoms (collectively referred to as Diatom Diazotroph Associations, DDAs). 5. 10. Egocentric interaction for ambient intelligence

    Författare :Dipak Surie; Lars-Erik Janlert; Thomas Pederson; Hans Gellersen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ambient Intelligence; Human-Computer Interaction; Context-Aware computing; Ubiquitous Computing; Mixed-Reality; Smart Environments; Activity-Based Computing; Ambient Ecology; business data processing; administrativ databehandling;

    Sammanfattning : Ambient intelligence refers to the vision of computationally augmented everyday environments that are sensitive, adaptive and responsive to humans and intelligently support their daily lives. Ambient ecologies are the infrastructures of ambient intelligence. LÄS MER
