1. Limiting factors in ATP synthesis
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present study was to investigate the biosynthesis of the ATP synthase in various tissues, and to test hypotheses about possible models of activation of several mitochondrial proteins, the ATP/ADP translocase and UCPs, that could utilize the proton gradient, thus bypassing the ATP synthase. We have examined the role of the expression of the P1 isoform of the c-Fo subunit in the biogenesis of ATP synthase in brown adipose tissue. LÄS MER
2. Determining Ligand- and Lipid- Interactions of SLC Transporters
Sammanfattning : Solute carrier transporters (SLCs) mediate the inter- and intra- cellular trafficking of a plethora of substrates and are essential to cell homeostasis. Despite their importance to human physiology and their potential as therapeutic targets, many SLCs are considered orphans as the physiological substrate has not been experimentally determined. 3. Nucleotide-binding Proteins in the Plant Thylakoid Membrane
Sammanfattning : Life on Earth is dependent on the oxygen produced through photosynthesis. The thylakoid membrane is the site for the light-driven reactions of photosynthesis, which oxidize water and supply energy in the form of ATP, mainly for carbon fixation. The utilization of ATP in the lumenal space of the thylakoid has not been considered in the past. LÄS MER
4. Molecular Mechanisms Optimizing Photosynthesis during High Light Stress in Plants
Sammanfattning : Oxygenic photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae and cyanobacteria use solar energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen and carbohydrates. Photosynthesis sustains life on Earth since it provides not only energy for individual growth, but also represents the starting point of the food chain for most living organisms. LÄS MER
5. Temporal monitoring of intracellular Ca2+ signaling and origins of Ca2+ oscillations
Sammanfattning : This thesis examined parameters influencing stimulated cytoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) oscillations in hepatocytes and pancreatic beta-cells. Hepatic glucose output is regulated in part by hormones such as vasopressin that act through [Ca 2+]i oscillations. LÄS MER
