6. The construction, analysis and validation of mechanistic mathematical models of protein kinetics in the context of replicative ageing in budding yeast
Sammanfattning : Mathematical modelling constitutes a forceful tool for elucidating properties of biological systems. Using theoretical approaches in combination with experimental techniques it is possible to study specific molecular aspects of phenomena such as the ageing of human beings. LÄS MER
7. Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) from a moderate halophile: production and modification for new applications
Sammanfattning : Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a homopolymer belonging to the family of biopolyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced by different bacteria and archaea as intracellular granules often under conditions of metabolic stress due to a limited supply of essential nutrients. The properties of the PHAs are similar to those of polyethylene and polypropylene and can hence replace these fossil based polymers in a large variety of applications. LÄS MER
8. The role of Malassezia allergens and mast cells in atopic eczema
Sammanfattning : Atopic eczema (AE) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, characterized by intense itching, dry skin, infiltration of immune cells and skin lesions. To date, the cause of AE, a disease affecting 15-30% of children and 2-10% of adults, remains unknown and the pathomechanisms are not fully understood. LÄS MER
9. Microarray Analysis of mRNA Decay Assays and Prediction of Drug Target Conservation
Sammanfattning : This thesis contains two papers concerning (I) the evolutionary conservation of drug targets and its potential use in environmental risk assessments and (II) mRNA degradation as a control mechanism during osmotic stress in the yeast S. cerevisiae. Environmental risk assessments are needed for the approval of new pharmaceutical compounds. LÄS MER
10. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics.
