1. Engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae for mixed-sugar fermentation
Sammanfattning : Efficient fermentation of all the monomeric sugars derived from lignocellulose is crucial to increase the economy of bioethanol production, since they can account for a considerable fraction of the fermentable sugars in the raw material. This thesis describes the engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for improved xylose, galactose and/or arabinose utilization. LÄS MER
2. Ethanol from lignocellulose : physiological effects of inhibitors and fermentation strategies
Sammanfattning : Fermentative ethanol production from dilute-acid hydrolyzates of wood using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. Of known inhibitors in hydrolyzates, acetic acid, furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) were found in the highest concentrations (up to about 10 g/l). LÄS MER
3. Process development for combined pentose and hexose fermentation
Sammanfattning : Second-generation ethanol from lignocellulose is a sustainable alternative that can partially replace fossil fuels. To be competitive with first generation ethanol from sugar and starch crops and fossil fuels, the conversion efficiency and ethanol yields of second-generation ethanol conversion processes must be improved. LÄS MER
4. Fermentation and Cultivation Technology for Improved Ethanol Production from Lignocellulose
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis has been aiming at improving ethanol production from lignocellulose. Ethanol from renewable resources is receiving renewed attention due to apprehensions of global warming and dwindling oil reserves. Lignocellulose constitutes a potential raw material source for large scale ethanol production. LÄS MER
5. Ethanol from Lignocellulose: Physiological Effects of Inhibitors and Fermentation Strategies
LÄS MER
