11. Xenotransplantation of fetal porcine islet-like cell clusters in diabetes mellitus : an experimental and clinical study

12. Immunological characterisation of human anti-pig responses in vitro
Sammanfattning : Xenotransplantation of organs or cells might solve the current problems of organ shortage. However, several problems need to be solved before xenotransplantation can become a successful clinical practice. Ethical, physiological, microbiological and immunological barriers need to be overcome. LÄS MER
13. Islet xenograft rejection : studies in the pig-to-rodents and pig-to-primate models
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis was: 1) to compare islet allo- and xenograft rejection in rats, using immunosuppression with CsA in a mixed allogeneic-xenogeneic islet transplantation model, 2) to evaluate the efficacy of various immunosuppressive drugs, with special reference to Leflunomide, in preventing islet xenograft rejection in the pig-to-rat model, 3) to perform an immunohistochemical study of porcine islet xenograft rejection in primates including primates treated with CsA+DSG, and 4) to study the metabolism and excretion of porcine C-peptide in mice, with special reference to the use of donor-specific C-peptide for monitoring islet xenograft function. In summary, the results were as follows: 1. LÄS MER
14. Immunity against porcine islet xenografts in man
Sammanfattning : Due to the lack of organs for clinical transplantation, alternative sources have been investigated. One solution to this shortage could be xenotransplantation, i.e. the transplantation of organs/cells across species barriers. LÄS MER
15. In vitro models of xenograft rejection : studies on leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions
Sammanfattning : Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of cells, tissues or organs between different species and is a potential alternative to allotransplantation because of the lack of human donors. The pig is believed to be a suitable donor-species to man for medical, technical, financial and ethical reasons. LÄS MER
