26. Studies on sensitization and atopic disease in infants and children
Sammanfattning : Sensitization to food allergens dominated in infancy and IgE antibodies to inhalant allergens appeared later in a cross-sectional multicentre study of 224 children with atopic disease (113 children aged 0-3 years and 111 children aged 4-15 years). IgE antibodies to peanut, hazelnut, and almond were important in both age groups and even before known ingestion in infancy, suggesting sensitization through breast-milk. LÄS MER
27. The sweet side of molecular structure : NMR spectroscopic studies of glycans and their interactions with proteins
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, within the topic of bioorganic chemistry, the molecular structure of carbohydrates has been studied. Carbohydrates, or glycans, are ubiquitous biomolecules exhibiting a wide range of biological roles. LÄS MER
28. Peptidoglycan regulation of Drosophila immunity
Sammanfattning : Innate immunity is an ancient defense system that distinguishes between self and non self and is present in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Peptidoglycan (PGN), a cell wall component shared by both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, is the major recognition molecule for the detection of bacteria in Drosophila. LÄS MER
29. Contract-theoretic analyses of consultants and trade unions
Sammanfattning : Why can junior management consultants bill four-digit dollar amounts a day for working with corporations and industries where they have no experience? Why do blue-collar workers organise in industry-specific unions involved in collective wage bargaining, while white-collars organise according to educational or professional background, offering résumé proof-reading, or don’t unionise at all? The doctoral thesis Contract-Theoretic Analyses of Consultants and Trade Unions consists of three self-containing essays in Economics of Organisation. What Do Consultants Do? asks why firms pay large fees to outsiders in core activities like management. LÄS MER
30. Antipredator defence in butterflies
Sammanfattning : Predation exerts a potent selection mechanism and has resulted in a suite of antipredation adaptations encompassing morphological and behavioral traits in prey. In butterflies, several such traits appear to be directed towards birds which are considered as one of their major predators. LÄS MER
