1. A Changing Arctic Climate : Science and Policy in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment
Sammanfattning : Climate change has often been framed as a global issue but slow progress in the global climate negotiations and an increasing need to plan for local adaptation have made it increasingly salient to also discuss the potential of other arenas for climate policy and knowledge production. This dissertation analyzes the interplay between science and policy at the international regional level based on a study of an assessment of the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. LÄS MER
2. Water and sediment quality of urban water bodies in cold climates
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study was to investigate and quantify pollution impact on urban waterbodies in cold climates and to find out which complex processes and influencing factors causetrapping or spread of pollutants. In order to do that water, sediment and porewater samplesfrom bays and stormwater ditches in Luleå, northern Sweden, and from an artificialstormwater pond in Sollentuna, south-central Sweden, were analysed for LOI, trace metalsand PAHs. 3. Small Sanitation Systems – Treatment Efficiency, Sustainability and Implementation
Sammanfattning : Current socio-technical wastewater system paradigms are being challenged by emerging global issues such as climate change, environmental degradation and scarcity of resources. Thus, exploration of innovative new urban water management solutions is required that enable closure of resource loops. LÄS MER
4. Groundwater resources in hard rock coastal terrains : Insights into heterogeneity and spatial variability
Sammanfattning : Challenges regarding water security in hard rock coastal regions with limited soil cover are: a seasonal absence of recharge during times of peak residency, heterogeneity and variability of the fracture network, close proximity to saline water sources and spatially inconsistent storage and extraction. In areas where it is not feasible to connect residents to municipal water systems, a better understanding of the resilience of reservoirs is needed. LÄS MER
5. Spatial variability of geogenic contaminants in drinking water sources : Insights into hydrogeological controls, geospatial data for safe water supply and groundwater resource management
Sammanfattning : The presence of geogenic contaminants in drinking water is a major health concern in many parts of the world. The interaction of groundwater with different rock types and sediments in the natural geochemical environment play an important role in controlling their mobility. LÄS MER
