16. Electrical remodeling in arial fibrillation - assessment using surface electrocardiograms, prognostic implications and potential reversal
Sammanfattning : The fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested for quantification of the individual atrial remodeling, to monitor interventions and to predict the response to different therapies. In this dissertation, the relation between fibrillatory rate of the surface ECG and (1) clinical and echocardiographic variables, (2) the outcome of cardioversion, (3) circulating markers of inflammation and hemostasis, (4) the risk of left atrial thrombus formation, (5) the risk of stroke, and (6) the effects of candesartan on the fibrillatory rate were investigated in human persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). 17. Expression of Tissue Antigens in Human Pluripotent Stem Cells and Alterations During Differentiation : Potential application in regenerative medicine for treatment of terminal cell and organ failure
Sammanfattning : The major limiting factor in the treatment of patients with end-stage organ failure is the insufficient number of human organs available for transplantation. An unlimited access to human cells, tissues and organs would also open up possibilities to treat several chronic diseases, such as diabetes, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, affecting millions of patients worldwide. 18. Studies on glycosphingolipids in regenerative medicine
Sammanfattning : Regenerative medicine, including stem cell based therapies and xenotransplantation, is a new and developing field that aims to restore normal function in end stage cell/organ failure. However, in therapeutic settings involving transfer of cells with a different genetic background, these cells will expose the recipient to non-self cell surface antigenic determinants that may evoke an immune response and subsequent graft damage. 19. The osteogenic potential of human mesenchymal stem cells: Novel markers and key factors for differentiation
Sammanfattning : Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stem cells with ability to differentiate into cells of the connective tissue lineage, such as adipocytes, osteoblasts and chondrocytes, both in vitro and in vivo. The main objective of the present thesis was to study different aspects of the osteogenic potential of MSCs. LÄS MER
20. Carotid artery disease : plaque features and vulnerability
Sammanfattning : Background: Atherosclerosis is an important cause of stroke. Ultrasound offers the convenience of real-time and detailed assessment of carotid plaque features as well as arterial wall thickening and composition. LÄS MER
